by MdRHS President Willie Hjorth

The ninth anniversary of Marina del Rey Historical Society’s official federal non-profit status was September 10, 2016. Sadly, longtime renowned photographer Greg Wenger, co-founder of the Society, passed away in early October. His family has memorialized his legacy by their extremely generous donation of Greg’s complete life’s photographic art collection to the Society. The Board of Officers and Directors of the MdRHS is genuinely grateful and honored to have received such an important and massive collection. Now comes the challenge to curate the collections as well as to implement procedures to protect and promote the historical aspects of Marina del Rey captured in thousands of images from 1970 – 2013. This huge donation builds upon the basis of core photographs received by MdRHS/Greg Wenger in 1975 which were taken pre-1970 by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Department of Beaches and Harbors, and Los Angeles Regional Planning Department in preparation for the development of Marina del Rey. Additional collections have been received from Summa Corporation (Howard Hughes), Security Pacific National Bank, and individual donations of early pre-Marina photographs.
